Obituary for Rayburn Junior McCormick

Ranburne, Alabama

Rayburn Junior McCormick, 64, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Hospice Unit of Emory University Hospital in Atlanta following an arduous battle with cancer.

Mr. McCormick was the son of Elbert and Lela McCormick, and brother to James McCormick and Linda Lewis. After graduating from Ranburne High School Mr. McCormick joined the Army. Mr. McCormick was a member of Charley Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Division. Some of his most memorable times in the service were while he was stationed in Berlin, Germany.

After leaving the service Mr. McCormick decided to take some night classes. There, not only did Mr. McCormick begin his journey into higher education, but he also met Lucretia Teague. Rayburn and Lucretia married and were truly the definition of soul mates. They had two children, Eric and Talia.

Mr. McCormick would go on to earn a Master's Degree in Education from JSU. He taught for 26 years at Ranburne Elementary School. Mr. McCormick enjoyed working with the kids and only retired because of his decline in health. The following year after his retirement Mr. McCormick worked half a day at the school so he could continue to share in the education of children in the Ranburne area. Mr. McCormick worked hard for his students and he cared for them deeply.

Mr. McCormick was a devout Christian and member of Old Hopewell Baptist Church.
Other than his walk with Jesus the most important thing to Mr. McCormick was family. Mr. McCormick also had a passion for gardening and being in the woods and would often share these hobbies with his loved ones. During the latter part of Mr. McCormick's life he was brought great joy from the birth of his two grandsons, Weston and William Hagan, and the news of a coming granddaughter, Rilyn Hagan. Mr. McCormick was also thankful for his son-in-law, Rodney Hagan, and his daughter-in-law, Tiffany McCormick.

Visitation for Mr. McCormick will be January 26, 2015 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. (CST) at Dryden Funeral Home in Heflin, Alabama.

Funeral services will be held on January 27, 2015 at 12 noon (CST) at Old Hopewell Baptist Church on County Road 43 in Heflin, Alabama. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour before the funeral service begins.
