Obituary for Willie Dewell Freeman

Delta - Willie Dewell Freeman passed from this life to his eternal home on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at the age of 94 surrounded by his family. He was born on April 12, 1928, to Adell and Alpheus J. Freeman. He was the oldest of their 6 children. On September 10, 1948, he married the love of his life, Jean Durham Freeman. Willie devoted his life to God, his family and gospel music and was a loving father, a beloved grandfather and a proud great-grandfather.

From a very early age, his parents instilled in him a love for God and music. Willie began singing in church with his parents and siblings which continued throughout their lives. He also sang with his children, Elaine and David, for many years. He was the high tenor singer with the Continental Quartet for many years. For over the past 20 years, Willie sang in the Freeman Family Trio which included his son, Connor, and nephew, Warren Freeman.

Willie was the oldest member of Abel Baptist Church where he was song director and a Deacon for 54years. He was also was a member of Dallas Masonic Lodge # 228 and Caldwell Masonic Lodge # 502.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 74 years, Jean Durham Freeman; children, Connor (Kayren) Freeman, Elaine (David) Dennis, David (Connie) Freeman and Pam (Scott) Austin; grandchildren, Rebekah Freeman, Christopher (Carolyn) Dennis, Joseph Freeman and Kyle (Amy) Dennis; great-grandchildren, Sarah Hope McBrayer, Sean Nettles, Seth Havard, Grace Dennis and Abigail Dennis, also E.J. Havard and Phoenix Havard; and sisters Geneva Robinson and Evelyn Warren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Leldon Freeman; his parents, Alpheus J. Freeman and Adell Freeman; and his siblings Arnold Freeman, Faye Mullally and Ertis Freeman.

Funeral services for Mr. Freeman will be Tuesday, August 16, 2022, 2:00 PM at Abel Baptist Church with Rev. Eugene Robinson and Rev. Buford Gaines officiating. Burial will following in Abel Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, August 15, 2022 from 5 until 7 PM at Dryden Funeral Home. Mr. Freeman will lie in state an hour prior to service time at the church.

Pallbearers will be: Joseph Freeman, Christopher Dennis, Kyle Dennis, David Dennis, Scott Austin, and Darrell Durham.
