Obituary for Richard Lamar Nelson

Richard Lamar Nelson
September 23, 1958 - January 6, 2022

Richard was born September 23, 1958, to Billy and Mildred Nelson in Etowah County, AL. He grew up in Hokes Bluff and graduated from Hokes Bluff High School in 1976. In 2012 he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Gadsden State with an Associate Degree. He joined the Alabama Army National Guard at age 27. He deployed from 2003 - 2004 to Iraq with the 1151st Engineer Team from Fort McClellan. He then deployed to Afghanistan from 2009 - 2010 with the 135th ESC out of Birmingham, AL. His final deployment was with the 135th ESC out of Birmingham to Kuwait in 2013.
Rick retired from the AL Army National Guard in November 2019 after 34 years of service and from the Alabama Army National Guard Training Site at Fort McClellan in January of 2020 after 20 years of service where he was employed as a Department of the Army Civilian.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Billy Nelson, mother, Mildred Phillips Graham, and step-father Johnny Graham.

Rick leaves behind his wife Donna, daughters Deanna (Dylan) Brown, Callie Nelson (Seth Elkins), grandson Lincoln Brown, and several brothers and sisters. Rick had several foster children he loved as his own.

Rick was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed working with his hands, military history, and gaming with his grandson. He had a joke for every situation and loved telling stories to his foster kids and grandson. He was a member of Pinetucky Baptist Church.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Stringfellow Memorial Hospital and Anniston Regional Medical Center.

Please join us in celebration of life as we say goodbye to our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 11, 2022 from 1pm to 2pm at Pinetucky Baptist Church in Heflin, AL. The service will be at 2pm with burial in the adjoining cemetery immediately following the service. Reverend Billy Morris will officiate.

Pallbearers will include: Billy Ayres, Leland Butler, Jamie Johnson, Ray Johnson, Ricky Snider, Kenny Yates, Ricky Heath, and Thomas Jatko.
