Obituary for Oneta Shackelford Cook

Cook
Montgomery - Oneta Shackelford Cook, age 103, passed away on February 10, 2022, just two weeks before her 104th birthday. Born February 24, 1918, Mrs. Cook was predeceased by her parents; Milton and Maria Shackleford, all siblings; and her husband of 59 years, retired Col. Earl B. Cook. She is survived by her sons; Grady (Phyllis) Cook and Doug (Pamela) Cook, her grandsons; Cullen Cook and Connor (Tayler) Cook, and great-granddaughter; Charlotte Cook.

A native of Virginia, she was a teacher until she met her future husband while he was serving in the Army Air Corps. A fateful dance at Ft. Monroe, VA, led to a military life including travel around the world, with several years in France when Col. Cook was a base commander. After Col. Cook’s retirement to Montgomery, AL, she became a charter member of the Maxwell AFB Retired Officer’s Wive’s Club. She also enjoyed golfing, and would frequently play with friends. At age 91, she decided to track her Virginian ancestry and became the oldest “new member” of the Francis Marion chapter of the DAR. She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

A special thank you to her caregivers for over 20 years at The Belmont Assisted Living.

Services will be held Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Pine Grove Church in Heflin, AL, at 1:30 PM with visitation 30 minutes prior. Rev. James Owens presiding with the assistance of Dryden Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be: Cullen Cook, Connor Cook, Alan Whitley, Phil Whitley, Chris Cook and Lex Brown.
