Obituary for M. Wayne Coggins

Anniston - Funeral Services for M. Wayne Coggins will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Dryden Funeral Home, Heflin, Al., with Reverend Phillip Morris officiating.Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Dryden Funeral Home. Wayne passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Stringfellow Hospital, Anniston,Al., on September 1, 2022.

Wayne was born on April 12, 1948, in Memphis, TN., to Marvin J. Coggins and Geralene Burton Coggins. He grew in his beloved Heflin, Al. He was an Eagle Scout and a memberof The Order of the Arrow with Troop 206, Boy Scouts of America, Heflin, Al. He was graduate of Cleburne County High School, Heflin, Al., Class of 1966. After graduating from high school, Wayne enlisted in the United States Army and served four years. He proudly became becamea member of the 173rd Airborne Combat Infantry (Paratrooper). He served two tours of combat duty in Vietnam earning the Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Combat Infantry Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Upon his return from military service, Wayne followed in his father’s footsteps and became a jeweler. He worked at Coggins Jewelry in Heflin, Al., and later at Cross Jewelry in Huntsville, Al. He left the jewelry trade and became an employee of the United States Postal Service. He worked with the Postal Service in Huntsville, Al., Anniston, Al., and Oxford, Al. He retired from the Postal Service earlier than planned dueto an illness caused from exposure to Agent Orange while serving in Vietnam.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Linda Ford Coggins, two children, Tricia Coggins Gusthormsen (Don), Ginger Coggins Carlisle (Paul), and sisters, Terry Coggins Hanners (Delmer), and Deborah Coggins DuHon (Kenneth). He is also survived by his granddaughter, Heather Gusthormsen Meeker (Max) and four great grandchildren. Wayne was preceded in death by his father, Marvin J. Coggins, and his mother, Geralene (Gerri) Coggins Garner Kennedy.
