Life of Lilla Mae Norton
Lilla Mae Norton was born and raised in Cleburne County, Alabama and was the daughter of a farmer. She met her husband, Lester M. Norton, as a teenager. They were married on February 9, 1957. Early in their marriage, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia for a few years and eventually moved back home to Cleburne County, Alabama to raise their family.
Lilla Mae was very strong willed, stern in her actions and words, determined, and committed to all that she done in her life. After moving back, Lilla Mae went to work as a seamstress for Sewell Manufacturing Company in Bremen, Georgia. She worked there for several years before becoming a full time mom and poultry farmer. She used the skills that she had as a seamstress to make clothes, curtains, bedspreads, and other household items for her family as well as others in the community.
During early spring, summer, and early fall, Lilla Mae's focus was on planting, harvesting, and canning. She loved the canning process and including the whole family. She enjoyed canning corn, okra, squash, peas, pears, peaches, and apples. Lilla Mae also enjoyed cooking as well as baking; especially deserts. She made a desert (cake, brownies, cookies, or puddings) with every meal except for breakfast. She also did a lot of baking. She baked and sold cakes for special occasions and during the holiday season.
Lilla Mae was also very involved in the community with church, vacation Bible school, and other school events including the band and sports. Lilla Mae's home become one of the school bus drop off for other kids in the community. She was very organized and had the kids enter through the garage door, put the school stuff on the couch, go through the kitchen to pick up snacks (cookie, brownies, cake, or ice cream) with drink, out the front door to eat on front porch, then play outside until parents picked everyone up or supper was ready. Yes, some kids did stay and eat supper. She always cooked like she was feeding an army because most of the time she was feeding a lot of people. This was the daily routine for many years during school time.
Lilla Mae touched a lot of people in her family, extended family, and her community. She and her home was a pillar of the community and the center for many family gatherings. Lilla Mae will be missed by her family as well as her community due to the impact she had in everyone's lives.
