Our precious grandmother (Laura Belle Gentry Shierling) went home to be with the Lord on January 4, 2023. We can only imagine the expression on her face when she reached her life’s goal and saw her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She had been preparing for this journey her whole life. Oh what a glorious celebration she is enjoying.

Laura was born on January 23, 1930, to Willie Mae Tims Gentry and George “Dee” Gentry. Laura lost her Daddy at a very young age and was raised by the man who would become known to her as “Dad”, William Frank Gentry.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband, H.L. (Lee) Shierling; daughter, June Delena Shierling Williams; son, Randall Lee Shierling; her baby boy, David Ray Shierling; great-great grandson, Maddox Willingham all of Fruithurst, AL and her sister, Margie Gentry Jones of Blairsville, GA.

Laura is survived by one sister, Dorothy Gentry Frost of Franklin, LA; son in law, Billy Williams; daughter-in-law, Jan Shierling. Nine Grandchildren: Caron Williams Davis (David), Donna Williams Willingham (Roy), Michael Williams; Angie Shierling Williams (Billy) Chad Shierling (Deanna). Great Grandchildren: Brandon Davis (Amy), Danita Davis, Nathan Davis, Lance Willingham (Erica), Hannah Williams, Trent Williams (Emily), Savannah Williams Bryant (Jake), Christian Williams (Shelby), Skylar Shierling, Kaylee Shierling. Laura loved her family more than anything in the world. She loved family gatherings. She loved playing games, laughing, having fun, and making memories. She was also dedicated to her church and had many, many generations of students come through her Sunday School Class. She is the only person we’ve ever known to host a Sunday School Class Reunion. Laura was a treasure. She loved singing. She loved gardening. She never grew just enough vegetables for herself. She always planted enough to share with family, friends, and neighbors. If you were ever blessed to enjoy one of her fried apple pies, oh my goodness, you were blessed.

Laura was by her husband’s side as they founded H.L. Shierling & Son in Fruithurst, AL. They were also among the original founders of the Pineywoods Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department. Lee & Laura Shierling were pillars of the Pineywoods Community. Their home was always a place where you could visit any time and be made to feel right at home. Our hearts, lives and our community will never be the same without these precious people. Heaven just got a little sweeter when Grandmother went home. We are certain she is rejoicing with her family and praising Jesus for paving the way for her family to be together again.

Oh how beautiful Heaven must be. Sweet home of the happy and free. Fair haven of rest for the weary, how beautiful Heaven must be.
