On Wednesday, Jan 5, we said "see you later" to our mom, our maw maw, our matriarch. I.V. Smith Otwell passed away at the home of Mark and Shelia Robinson surrounded by family. She was 101 years old.
I.V. was preceded in death by her parents, Alpha and Louis Smith; husband, Fred Otwell; three sons Raymond, Gary and Glynn Otwell; daughter, Cliffie Smith; sisters Flossie Gibbs, Beatrice Alewine, Mary Richardson, Dorothy Alewine, and Otimae Treadwell; brothers Billy and Junior Smith; daughters-in-law, Deborah and Sharon Otwell; and son-in-law, Jimmy Partlow.
She is survived by her son, Lynn (Bobbie Jo) Otwell; daughter, Shelia (Mark) Robinson; daughter, Mary Jane Partlow; daughter, Sharon (Matt) Perkins and sister, Bennie Kilgore. She was Mawmaw I.V. to 17 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren.
Known for her seamstress skills and serving the public for many years, working a full time job at Plunketts, planting a large vegetable garden, canning and taking care of her home never detoured her from finding time to spend with her family.
She could always be found building forts in the backyard, digging up jugs on a nature walk in the the woods, or drawing a fresh pail of water from the well for us to drink from the dipper. Mawmaw I.V. was known for her homemade biscuits, cornbread fritters, and her love for HeeHaw, the Atlanta Braves and Randy Travis. She spent many hours canning, quilting, reciting riddles, and telling stories of her childhood. She would sing, dance, and play chase just to bring a smile to the face of a child.
Mawmaw I.V. lived a long, full life before being robbed of her memory and mind by Alzheimer's. She left a legacy of love, laughter, hard work and perseverance. Mawmaw I.V. may be gone but the memories made and skills she taught us lives on.
We invite our friends and family to join us Sunday, January 9 at Freedom Baptist Church 2 - 4 PM GA time 1-3 PM AL time as we celebrate the life and legacy we were blessed to have known and loved.
