Survivors include his wife: Martha Smith Brown; children: Carrie McWhorter (Owen); Michael G. Brown (Heather); Silas P. Brown IV (Cheryl); Kellie Grubbs (Jay); grandchildren: Avery and Stella McWhorter; Spencer, Mikaela, Madelin, Rylan, Alexandra, and Isabella Brown; Aidan, Evan, Meara, and Silas P. Brown V; Bennett, Lillie, and Mallory Grubbs; sister: Pat McElroy (Richard) Smith; brothers: Winford (Myrtice), Ralph (Eunice), and Bill (Carol) Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews who he loved dearly and who loved him back.
Mr. Brown was a native of Cleburne County and lived in Muscadine most of his life. He was a 1959 graduate of Cleburne County High School. He was married to the love of his life, Martha Ann Smith Brown, for 51 years. He was called “John” by family and friends and also was known by nicknames “Fuzz” and “Cowboy.” He worked as a sprinkler fitter and was a 60-year member of Road Local Union 669. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1965 and was a member of Caldwell Lodge, Heflin, Alabama.
After retirement he became known locally and throughout the nation as a maker of fine sorghum syrup. He loved people and gave great hugs, and he enjoyed gardening and time outside. One of the greatest joys in his life was his grandchildren. He said he wanted a quiver full, and the Lord blessed him with 15.
He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, in Muscadine, Alabama.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his parents, S.P. and Bernice Whitt Brown; his sister, Carolyn, who died in infancy; brothers Silas P. Brown Jr. and W.L. “Cotton” Brown.
The family extends a special thanks to the staff at Big Springs Place in Cedartown, Georgia, and Amedisys Hospice for their love and care for Mr. Brown these past few months.
Flowers, cards, and memorial contributions to your favorite charity are equally welcome. Contributions to Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama, or P.O. Box 2273, Birmingham, Alabama 35201, or a children's book to your local library or elementary school would be especially appropriate.
