Obituary for Dorothy H. Smith (Hudgins)

Dorothy H. Smith, 77, passed away Saturday morning at her home surrounded by family. On February 26, 1944 Dot was the third of eight children, born to Houston (Buck) and Inez Hudgins.

Dot married the late Gerry Hollis in 1961. Together they had a daughter, Donna. After Gerry’s death, Dot married the late Richard Smith and had a daughter, Meredith. Donna and Meredith were blessed to be loved by them for many years.

Dot was employed at Sewell Manufacturing Company where she found her passion for sewing. She shared her many talents of sewing with the ones she loved throughout the years. She made countless stockings, masks, and aprons that were given far and wide. Dot used her creativity to make table runners and mantle cloths for the church she cherished. Her Christmas stockings were a true labor of love. Dot was a true sassy, southern lady. Every visitor to her home was offered food (at least once) during their visit. If anyone left hungry, it wasn’t her fault.

She was a devoted wife, mother, Dot-Dot, sister and friend. She loved her family more than anything and was so proud of them. Dot-Dot is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Donna and Ray Taylor of Heflin, AL and Meredith and Michael Ferguson of Chatham, IL.Her grandchildren, Caitlyn, Lauryn, Ben, Jager and Jaxon. One sister, Judy Brown and two brothers, Horace Hudgins and Tommy Gill. One sister-in-law Rebecca Forney. She was proceeded in death by her sisters Betty Duncan, Mickey Johnson, and Dura Riddle and her brother Sam Hudgins. Dot-Dot was loved by many and will be missed terribly.
